'A safe place to land' - redefining the experience of safety through storytelling

An interactive theatre workshop that uses theatre techniques and storytelling to explore the complexities of emotional safety in healthcare and how the experience of feeling safe/unsafe can be reshaped through compassionate narrative.

Gemma Boyd is an HEE Transformation and Leadership Fellow for Nottinghamshire, leading on a workforce transformation project focusing on integrating new roles into the workforce. She has 17 years clinical experience as a Midwife as well 4 years experience as a clinical educator at NUH. Within this role she lead on maternity support worker development and preceptorship. She has 20 years experience using drama and theatre in midwifery education and is now Company Director of Progress Theatre, a midwifery theatre company that facilitates performances and workshops around the UK and Ireland that shine a light in the dark corners of midwifery culture and use theatre as a force for change in practice.

In 2017 Progress Theatre presented at the Irish Directors of Nursing and Midwifery Conference as well as the International Normal Birth Conference. Gemma has published her experience of using theatre in midwifery education in ‘The Roar Behind The Silence’ Edited by Soo Downes and Sheena Byrom, a book that has inspired international conferences and is now a key text on many midwifery courses across the globe. She has been shortlisted with her colleague for a RCM Award for Excellence in Education, Learning and Research.
